September 30 2003: Went to Monterey and stayed at the Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa, which one should only visit if you like rust-colored marble, which was everywhere.  I do, so it was great.  It is right down the street from Cannery Row and the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which we had dinner at:

The jellyfish were the main event with elaborate tanks framed like pieces of art. How they didn't get completely tangled is beyond me. They also featured art pieces inspired by jellyfish like these glass pieces, whimsically placed in aquariums.

just like playing Ecco the Dolphin*
Dinner was amazing, they sat us next to this two-story-tall tank, which was totally mesmerizing.  The only light was that from the tank and twinkling candles from the tables- very romantic! The tank had enormous blue and yellow fin tuna, mahi-mahi, soup-tail, white point* and hammerhead sharks, barracudas, manta rays and giant sea turtles*.  So strange seeing so many large predators together. But really, the jellyfish were the center of attention, as they should be.  Photos cannot capture how beautiful they were.  Some had bizarre phosphorescence, others were totally transparent- so so bizarre.

Now the schooling fish exhibits I actually remember from when I came here as a kid. Which are male?  Which female?  Only they know!
