Ten Things I Like

1) the Honey
2) procrastinating- perhaps that is why I thrive in jobs that have lots of tough deadlines, it keeps me focused and on schedule
3) Peerless Water Colors- they are so cool for art on the go, just grab your Niji Water Brush and you are off. I just found out they have 200 colors to choose from and you can buy individual sheets for a buck. Great for travel and they work really well on photographs.
4) leaves and rocks
5) checklists- what is it that is so great about making lists? Any time I am at a loss for what to do or where to begin, I start making a list and things start falling into place. I also love visally seeing how many square boxes there are that need filling or have been filled up.
6) tea- well this is a no brainer for people who know me. Right now I am enjoying several varieties of herbal mint tea, inlcuding Tazo Refresh (just a hint of taragon makes it more serious) and Twinings Pure Peppermint (reminds me of the old Pelican Punch from Celestial Seasonings). Herbal tea is a great way to add more flavor to boring old tap water. For a more complex, romantic tea, I just discovered the jasamine goodness of "1001 Nights" from the Ceylon Tea Company.
7) the kitchen- that is my room. I am on this new kick where I clean the kitchen every night before I go to bed. I tell myself I'll just do ONE thing, like put a single dish into the dishwasher. Then I end up cleaning the whole thing since I've started. I have been keeping the kitchen totally spotless for over two weeks now. (Again, if you know me, you know this is nothing short of a miracle.) I've read that if you do something for over 27 days, it becomes a habit, and there is also a web site that touts: if your sink is clean, your whole house is. So I am giving it a shot. The kitchen is also something I like because that is where cooking happens. My new favorite thing to do in the kitchen is making ice cream using our new super easy Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker. (Thank you Robert & Renee!) I just keep the frozen thing in the freezer all the time and during a lull in a raid or something, toss milk, cream and sugar, plus any flavorings into the hopper and 25 minutes later- lush, tasty ice cream! The texture is divine.
8) I almost put tea again, heh. Um... ok so I'll put cheese! Again, no surprise... I love cheese on everything, espeically melted. And we all know my favorite: Tillamook Cheddar. OMG there is a recipe on that site for "Beer Cheddar Soup". Holy crap I am making that tonight. If we behave a little strange in Ahn'Quiraj tonight, you'll know why. Which brings me to...
9) World of Warcraft
10) reading- I can just read all day and do nothing else. I am progressing nicely through reading all of the Nebula award-winning novels, and am currently ensconced in the most recent winner, "Camouflage" by Joe Haldeman. I just finished up both the Farseer Trilogy and the Tawny Man trilogy from Robin Hobb, who lives in Tacoma.

Again, probably just for me

While I know I should be taking this time to entertain you, often a blog is just a great spot to store crap I come across so I can look at it later. I liked: Dilbert Needs a Favor

the movie that shall not be named

Welp after a year of talking about it, I finally wrote up my A/E resume and sent it out to a company. As "Sean Connery" would say on those fake Celebrity Jeopardy bits, "and so it begins!"

In other news, My dear husband has seen fit to send me a mocking e-mail. This is a rare and treasured occurence, so I post it here to remember it always. I have tried to teach him how to tease, as it the custom in my family, and I think he is getting the hang of it. Many of you have heard me speak of "the movie that shall not be named" which refers to a movie so foul, none may speak of it in my presence. He, of course, loved the movie and felt it would become a "Cult Classic". I disagree whole heartedly, since there is nothing redeeming about the movie, whatsoever. It is a subject for family debate, as Kevin has also been known to Tivo it and threaten to hold a viewing when I might be nearby. What is the matter with these people? Here is Jonathan's email to me on the subject:

"While examining the iTunes page for the Van Helsing Soundtrack, I ran across some reviews that were poignant in their simplicity in lauding an American instant classic:

Gabriel’s Angel had the following to say:
LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!!!!! <5 stars>
“THIS MOVIE IS ONE OF THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME AND THE MUSIC ROCKS MY WORLD! YAY ALAN!!!! :D”

S Dizzle opined, and I quote:
Van Helsing Rox <5 stars>
“this is like the best movie ever and i think im (sic) going ot (sic) buy the cd!”

Not to be outdone, Craver 360!!!!!!!!! sounded off, notice the pointed use of punctuation to underscore the intellectual ideas:
TOO COOL!!! <5 stars>
“I loved the movie and this music is what made that so!!!”

And with probably the most discriminating yet emphatic missive of the bunch, inu galore reflected:
Helsing <5 stars>
Van Helsing [refers to the Steven Sommers film Van Helsing (2004)] is the best movie of the 20th century and the music is awesome!!!!

So I’m sure you can well appreciate how I’m in good company in my appreciation of this masterwork of filmmaking."

Focus people, focus!

That is what Britta says when she wants us to play some damn Boggle with her. Again. We did play a board or two when I visited Seattle, so that was fun. I spent a bunch of time over at her house doing nothing in particular, and everyone got together for a big BBQ and played some games one night, which was really great. We went and got B a full set of golf clubs. How I wish I could stay behind to get my own set out and play with her. Seattle was so beautiful- everything in bloom! My house looks great- the gardener has brought back the lawn and the apple tree flowered. It felt so gigantic after being in a small apartment, and it was so nice driving around familiar streets and shops. I really miss it, especially all the freinds I've made, but I am trying hard to give Los Angeles a chance.

What I really need to do is get a job. I know I've been saying that a while, and yet something always gets in the way: a move, a nice consulting gig, a wedding, etc. I have a web site job I am thinking of turning down so I can concentrate on getting a real job. It seems like it will be too much of an uphill battle to warrant any money I might gain from it. I could be spending that time getting a steady job that might feel my soul, instead of a money-making opportunity that drains it.

This last job reminded me of all the things I love and hate about consulting. It garnered me about ten grand for two weeks of work, and it is always thrilling to work on emergency or important proposals. I got the feeling they would have been in serious trouble without me, so I got that ego burst. But this client is -always- in trouble and they never seem to keep anybody around long enough to learn from their mistakes. I think over and over about how if this were permanently my department how much better I could make it, so they would avoid these emergency situations. I ache to be a part of a regular team that works at making things better and then keeping them better, to help a company grow. To be around when they win the contract or grant I wrote the proposal for, and watch people working on it to build the good reputation that will net the firm another job and another.

So I think I need to stop doing these consulting jobs and send out some resumes and go to some networking functions. I heard from someone at my former employer that they had a big marketing retreat where they were all supposed to bring together examples of good proposals. In the region I used to lead, all the proposals they brought were from over a year ago and had all been done under my management, one of which had been totally done by me as an outside consultant after I quit! Since I left in November 2004, they have been unable to produce anything to equal the things I did during my short nine months there? There just has to be a company who needs some of that. I am sure there is someone out there who needs me. I've been trying to get together my portfolio or explore new industries, but perhaps I just need to get a job just like the last two I've had and hope for the best. Perhaps I've learned enough to not end up taken advantage of like I have been in the past. I have just always had this feeling that someplace I would be really useful, and I only need to find it.
